Montessori Programs look at a child's
intelligence as a fertile field that has limitless
boundaries. It believes in the approach that the
child will have an accelerated growth if he/ she
is allowed to explore their imaginations by
providing a conducive environment that acts
as a stimulant for their growth. A child must not
be forced to memorize or understand but
instead should be given the freedom to
explore.
In regard to the conventional approach, the
Montessori programs share a contemporary
outlook towards education giving it an
advantage in comparison to other approaches.
- The traditional approach looks at
having a learning environment where his
improved test scores are used to judge the
improvement in a child's growth and the
measurement in terms of learning is limited to
patterned tests. Such kind of an accountability
has brought fear into the minds of the young
where the year round progress is dependent on
a test evaluation method. This aspect in
education is being debated worldwide. This is
where the Montessori program has an edge as
the program encourages round the year
development and progress based on the
growth evident in the behavior, attitude and
the mental level of the child that can be
perceived by anyone who interacts with them.
- It is believed that children take pride in
doing things themselves and will become
more self-discipline if they are empowered to
choose activities designed for specific
development and learning need. The
Montessori schools make a considerable effort
towards helping children become more self-discipline
and independent by concentrating
on the full development of the child.
- The Montessori schools pay more attention
towards the mental, physical and sensory
development of the child. They therefore lay
more emphasis on how to reason and
understand, identify and solve problems, work
in teams and communicate effectively.
- In the traditional education system, the
approach based on testing is more of a factory
oriented approach to learning. In such an
approach controls are implemented on the end
result and quality, thereby encouraging a
uniform development of all the children.
Whereas the Montessori approach considers
each child as an individual having unique
talent, growth and learning pattern, and
therefore concentrates on creating an
environment suitable to the development of
each child's unique capabilities.
- The main issue under consideration in a
typical Montessori program is that children
should not have education thrust on them, but
should be encouraged to learn, as per their
own unique styles which are best suited for
their pace of development.
- Through the Montessori approach to
learning it is observed that children assume
greater role in helping to care for the
environment, and also act as the mentors by
meeting the needs of the younger children. By
playing this role the child experiences courtesy
and trust that is in turn reflected in the child's
personality.
